for Brass Band
Programme Note
‘Postcards’ is a multi-movement piece for brass band, originally commissioned by Cathays Brass, supported by Tŷ Cerdd and Arts Council of Wales. The piece explores a series of musical postcards over three distinct movements ranging in mood and style:
Movement 1 – Promenade
The first movement opens with a rapturous fanfare before progressing into a playful upbeat groove. This is inspired by the light, energetic style of brass band music you would typically hear on a bandstand or promenade.
Movement 2 – Hymn from the Hills
The second movement is an ode to Wales’ reputation as the ‘Land of Song’ and rich singing tradition. Structured in a chorale-like form, this movement contrasts the upbeat tone established in the first movement with slower, lyrical melodies and dense cluster chords. There are also folk and celtic influences throughout the movement, guiding the listener on a journey through the enchanting Welsh countryside.
Movement 3 – Heart of the Dragon
The final movement is a theme and variations on the popular Welsh tune, Calon Lân. Growing up in Wales, it was one of the first songs I learnt to sing as is arguably the most famous hymn associated with Wales. The movement opens with a spirited variation on the tune, which is then developed through a series of transformations, exploring an array of moods and tonal areas. The theme is finally presented in a more recognisable form as a euphonium solo, supported by emerging harmonic accompaniment. The movement builds to a rousing conclusion, underpinned by powerful open chords in the lower brass with the emotive melody soaring over the top.
